March 2010
As the 2009/2010 season comes to a close, this is great time to let everyone know how things are going in our Club. Financially we continue to be in a good position despite the increase in electricity expenses that have risen to almost $2,300 monthly while the ice plant is operating. More of a concern is the drop in membership during the past three years. Presently, we have 62 members, down five from last year, and 13 juniors. It our intention to conduct a membership drive in the fall and perhaps even host a pre-season dinner at the Club in order to get things off to a fact start in November. Your ideas and participation would be very much appreciated.
All-in-all though, it has been a successful year. The evening draws went smoothly, our teams did well in provincial completions, most notably as second places in the Men’s Dominion and Girls 12 & Under, and we’ve enjoyed good participation in the Club funspiels. We have been able to bring in some additional income through the rental of the upstairs room, hosting high school curling classes and from the Tuesday evening Texas Hold’Ems. Nearly all participants at the four Provincial competitions we’ve hosted were very complimentary about our hospitality as well as the ice condition. And speaking about our ice, the Board wishes to publicly express appreciation for the outstanding work by Walter, John and Eddie with the able assistance of Kevin and Dave for the superlative ice conditions they have given us this year. We have, arguably, the best and most consistent ice on the Island – and it’s fast – oh so fast. Virtually all the curlers during the Provincial Men’s Final Six were amazed by the speed and, actually, some had some initial difficulty in throwing rocks light enough to stay in the house let alone place guards. And speaking of volunteers, they are the heart of our Club. Most especially, due to the active participation of nearly all our members we have been able to provide hospitably that is second to none. Thanks to the able orchestration of Audrey and unflinching food contributions of our members, no one who has participated in any of our weekend completions and tournaments has left unstated. We especially appreciate the box of oysters that Les provides each funspiel. It is also appropriate to acknowledge the excellent work of Dan Pottier who, despite not being able to curl this year, continues to make our website informative and topical. So, as things wind down, the Board wishes to express
appreciation to all our members for continued support to the Club.
If there are any of you who have ideas about we may provide even better
service we would be pleased to receive them. We hope to see all of
you, and with some of your friends in tow, next season, Father Art Pendergast
